I have a coax lightning arrestor, hooked to a std copper ground rod, driven so only an inch sticks up, with about 18" of 8 gauge copper wire, interposed between the ISP's cable and the cable coming on in to the modem on a shelf about 6 feet from where I am sitting. Zero damages in several years, and the pole the cable the ISP cable comes from has been smacked with mother natures best quite a few times in those same years.
