Debian installs different than most linux distributions. The cd
installs the operating system, without any desktop environment (GNOME).
Apparently, many users like to add their own choices to that
installation. One of the questions in the install asked what you want
to add. The different desktops are included in that question, along
with Print Server, SSH Server, and something else. Gnome is
highlighted, but you have to hit space to put an asterisk on it to get
it installed. Now that the installer finished, you can add Gnome.
