When I say that you'll "probably want to keep your replies on-list", I
mean you'll want to respond to debian-user@lists.debian.org, not to me.
One of the reasons is that the people there may have answers which I do
not. For example, I have no idea why "startx" would cause the system to
reboot; it shouldn't. I know enough to look around in the log files
/var/log/, probably the X.org log, but some one else on the list may
know exactly how to address this issue.

Although it may be somewhat difficult to get used to doing, this

Although you say gnome is not installed, you haven't let us know what
was the result of "startx &". Did X start? Did you get an error
message? If so, what did it say?
To install gnome, you should be able to "aptitude install gnome",
which/I think/ will pull in all the gnome pieces. Others on this list
can probably give you better info on this. You might could also run
"tasksel" instead, which is a higher-level, menu-driven app allowing
you to select various tasks you'd like to do with your computer.

Log in, and try the command "startx". Anything?
If that works, you probably either need a login manager (like kdm,
xdm, gdm3, sddm) and/or have a problem with your existing login
manager.
If "startx" does not work, either X wasn't installed, or has a
problem.
Let's see what your result is to "startx" before we go any farther.
