After reading some threads on a few mono boards, I had a run through the logs and process table on my debian system. Apache was running so I stopped the service. As soon as it was stopped, the install completed within a minute. I restarted Apache (nervously) and it was fine. I ran through a couple of small apps quickly bolted up in C#, and they all seemed to run ok, so I guess I'm off and running with mono running nicely on Debian! Thanks again for the suggestions - they really helped.
