I think you're right. I remember a lot of consternation after ATI announced that they would be producing no more Open Source drivers, effectively leaving the FOSS community to it's own (excuse the pun) devices. It was kind of a glass half empty / half full thing. Since they released a lot of information about the hardware to the Open Source devs I guess it worked out pretty well. I think most people using most ATI graphics cards with FOSS drivers are reasonably content. The guys developing free drivers for the Nvidia graphics cards seem to have a lot harder job to do, but they also seem to be up to the task. It's coming along slowly, but the nouveau drivers are most certainly working well enough for me. I also think that getting rid of the nv drivers (useful as they were for a while) was the best thing to do. I long since eschewed the use of the closed source Nvidia drivers, deciding to make do with what nouveau could do for me. I always saw weird system lockups with the proprietary drivers on systems with high end Nvidia graphics. Those lockups looked for all the world like incipient hardware failure. Tough as heck to troubleshoot. Until I went to the Open Source drivers. Suddenly, no more lockups. (Also, not much in the way of 3D acceleration, at least in the beginning. But at least the systems ran without locking up.) But all the systems I've bought recently use integrated Intel graphics. I imagine no gamer would be happy with them, but they work well enough for my purposes. And they're rock solid. It seems that it is a good point that, computer power vs power consumption considerations aside, it's a good idea to at least consider AMD when choosing a new system. But the current status of drivers for Ethernet, wireless, and graphics certainly makes it easy for me to get Intel systems that work with Debian main repository only. the worrier -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
