Just for clarity, there's little debate on the matter of the existing sysvinit/sysv-rc/initscripts setup being optimal. It's clearly inferior to most of the contemporary solutions (excepting file-rc, which is even more primitive). You won't find any disagreement with the sysvinit maintainers on that point--we're really just keeping it going until we have a suitable replacement. systemd is right at the top of the list when looking solely at the technical details; while it might have the odd questionable design choice, on the whole it's a very nice system. But whether systemd is appropriate as the default Debian init depends on a bit more than just that--it also has to fit into the Debian system as a whole. At the moment it's very much a RedHat project, implementing the RedHat way of doing things, and this doesn't always fit it nicely with our historical practices and policies. Regards, Roger -- .''`.
