thanks for the input - I am suspecting hardware myself..but can see anything in the logs or elsewhere. It seems that when i run a backup script in screen - it seems to be putting the server in a freezing state (can not get the numlock light to come on when pressed). The script only does a mysqldump and tar - that is all.
any other thoughts would be appriciated.
