While FSF may not consider it to be free, it is as long as you have not used the non-free and contrib repos. Install the package called vrms and run it from the terminal. If you have no programs in that list, then you're running a system that is just as free as any FSF-recommended OS. It used to irk me as well that Debian was not considered free by FSF, but they give us the choice.
