Hey Laurence,

we [0] are actually managing around 300+ hosts here [1]
with Debian preseed and cdist [2].

We used to use fai [3] and puppet[4] before, but moved
migrated away from both:

- fai is great and easy to use, but already does way more then
  we need: We wanted to have a minimal system bootstrapped, that
  will be afterwards configured by out configuration
  management system (puppet/cdist). Seperating these steps gave
  us a more flexible and cleaner way. Though fai is still great
  software to begin with (has easier disk setup than preseed)

- We dropped puppet for several reasons, see [5].
