This won't please your wife and children but may help narrow down where
the problem lies.

Install the package 'pmount'. Plug in the stick and, as a user, do 

pmount /dev/sdb1

List files on the drive with

ls -l /media/sdb1

If that works the problem would appear to be with the automounting
software.
