It looks to me as though the reactions to the original email can be used to distinguish accurately between the Americans and English among us! ;-) And before anyone reacts, I mean "English". The Scots, Welsh and Irish among us probably use yet another structure (or other structures). I didn't actually get my grammar book out. (And this is conversation, not literary, so even my teachers would have accepted "didn't" for "did not".)
