Since I am not on the developer list I did not see it when it first appeared at the beginning of October. In any event I installed package icedtea-gcjwebplugin (Lenny), which caused openjdk-6-jre and dependencies to be installed as well. (Also installed were 10 ttg font packages for various Indian languages which I later purged.) I then ran "update-alternatives --config java", which now gave me the choice of either /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java or /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java. I changed the default from java-6-sun to java-6-openjdk. Finally I opened OpenOffice. The java options window there also showed both java-6-sun and java-6-openjdk. I switched from the former to the latter. If I have problems I will report back. Thanks for the tip.
