There are probably better ways, but you can usually purge and reinstall
Yes, that's what I've done.
But doing that way I loose enabled modules and sites for apache.
Not that hard to reinstall, but could be worse.
I can also extract from source may be.
I just hope there's some good switch to apt-get or dpkg?
you can extract the package content also:
cd /tmp
mkdir apache2_tmp
cd apache2_tmp
