At Dave's suggestion I wrote to Evgeni Golov, the v86d maintainer, who
is super responsive. Last try he had me rebuild the v86d package w/o a
patch he had put in it.
Then he had me try rebuilding v86d with the rules entry changed to
./configure --with-x86emu and still the patch removed.
No entry in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules for uvesafb
And then load uvesafb from /etc/modules with:
uvesafb mode=1024x768-32
And that works!
So now I can run linux-image-2.6.26-1-686 and have framebuffers again,
except I have as of yet to rebuild v86d.
