(Evolution has something similar, but also still has folders.) Because with folders the messages are just *there*. No need to click this, click that, search this, search that. Here's a link to a screenshot of my nested folders and threaded email. It's Icedove, but Evo, Sylpheed & KMail, Iceape etc would all look essentially the same.
