I have used Devolo powerline equipment in my house, and it is very handy if wireless isn't an option. They have a utility (last I saw, windows only....) that allows you to put an encryption key into the devices. Once they are keyed, they work just like a hub and are fine with Debian. I haven't investigated how secure the encryption is, but for most folks, it's probably 'good enough'. The signal is blocked by your power meter, so it doesn't leave the house. Performance is fine, just like a 100Mbps hub. They work fine for me, but as always, YMMV.... -pedxing
