Weren't you here when people were going from Sarge to Etch? Lots of people ended up in a complete mess. Sure, sometimes you can if you're not upgrading anything to do with X. Most users aren't able to make that determination before they run into trouble. You can do whatever you like. If it breaks, you keep all the pieces.
