I did a little bit of more searching to find the answer. After going here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?which=pkg&data=sox&archive=no&version=&dist=testing I found a hint that you & I need to install the files: libsox-fmt-mp3 & libsox-fmt-ogg in order to get sox back to being able to manipulate these files directly.
