When I've done updates on this system, I've used aptitude dist-upgrade
after aptitude update and these errors still persist. So it could be for
whatever reason aptitude dist-upgrade fails to correct this situation.

It's not leaving its error messages in /var/log/dmesg for one thing. For
another it appears to complain about missing utilities for this kernel
version. If lvm is broken in kernel 2.6.18, how do I clear the system of
it and its problems?
