My Debian Etch is faster to boot and load Firefox/Thunderbird/Gimp and

solid distro, despite its few shortcomings.
I have to agree. Etch is faster than Dapper or Edgy. I'm quite
impressed with the speed. What I found to be lacking were decent
looking fonts. When using IceWeasel, even Distrowatch looks poor. A
simple fix by installing mssttcorefonts and running dpkg-reconfigure
fontconfig, but would a new user know that?
The same package needs to be installed on Ubuntu, but I never really
noticed because I let automatix install them (and all of the codecs) for
me. I already knew what I would need to add to Etch to be able to view
my videos and play my music, and I knew the repository to get what was
needed. That isn't something that everyone will easily find. Googling
will help, but one has to read, and I am afraid that there are a lot of
people in this world who don't bother reading anything other than what
brand of beer it is they're pouring down their throats.
