a way around it would be to use either the etch installer to install sarge or use a backported installer (for example from http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i/). then you should have not problems with hw an have a stable (and not changing) system. though if you can spend the bandwith to try i would probably reocmmend to try to start with a standard sarge netinst cd....
