I should also add, use a unique package name. For example, I used the name kernel-image-2.4.18-custom.3 (with version "custom.3"). Since the name is different from every other package, apt will never try to automatically upgrade it (there is no other package _with that name_ that could potentially be newer). -D -- Bugs come in through open windows.
