I'm finding the HOWTOs a bit confusing due to their various dates, and
knowing what applies to Debian. Frustrated, I installed xmms hoping for the
best, but didn't get anywhere. Tried install alsa-base and got:

Starting ALSA sound driver (version none):modprobe: Can't locate module snd
failed.
Can someone set me on the right path? I'd like to end up being able to play
CDs, MP3s, have a good basic mixer. Normal stuff.
