I've got a Sound Blaster Live! (Value) card, and I can cat .wav files to /dev/audio.
But, I was unable to get this (from the sound HOWTO) to work: dd bs=8k count=4 </dev/audio >sample.au no errors "recording", but playing the resulting sample.au just makes crackling noises. I'm finding the HOWTOs a bit confusing due to their various dates, and knowing what applies to Debian. Frustrated, I installed xmms hoping for the best, but didn't get anywhere. Tried install alsa-base and got: Setting up alsa-base (0.9+0beta10-6) ... depmod: /lib/modules/2.4.17/kernel/drivers/sound/sample.au is not an ELF file Starting ALSA sound driver (version none):modprobe: Can't locate module snd failed. Can someone set me on the right path? I'd like to end up being able to play CDs, MP3s, have a good basic mixer. Normal stuff. bumby:/lib/modules/2.4.17/kernel/drivers/sound# ls -l total 140 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 15156 Mar 8 13:16 ac97_codec.o drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Mar 8 13:18 emu10k1 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 32768 Mar 8 15:36 sample.au -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 83574 Mar 8 13:16 sound.o -- Bill Moseley
