Along with text search, xpdf provides this feature as well. Though frankly, when I'm working with a text at this level, I prefer to dump it to text. You can use pdftotext (from xpdf-utils) to generate text from PDF docs. Little reason to support Adobe's mindshare. -- Karsten M.
