Fair point, but acrobat supports searching and xpdf doesn't. Much as I disapprove of adobe, I could not swap from acrobat to xpdf. I have hundreds of PDFs and the ability of htdig to index them, and acroread to search for text in them is an essential feature. If xpdf supported text search and provided whatever functionality htdig needs to perform its indexing then I would very happily dump acroread.
