Try running modconf as root first. It's kinda cryptic, initially, but most of the time it won't fail to install the proper modules conforming to your hardware. You'll really need to know thy hardware. Newer versions of the Linux kernel support more devices. In which case, you can download the source code of the Linux kernel, compile the wanted functionality into the kernel directly, or as modules, prior to installing the new kernel into the system.
