I've tried both Nautilus and gmc with autofs, repeatedly, but noone of
them worked flawlessly (Nautilus not at all) - the problem seems to be
that autofs creates the mountpoint on the fly, whereas the floppy and
cdrom icons on the desktop with their whole functionality don't
like/understand that.

A possible way as I can see would be to use the mtools technology for
the floppy (there is a file manager based on mtools, but it looks very
primitive and has only basic capabilities).
