in my 5 years of running X windows my experience is X is unusable for the most part with anything below 1024x768. 800x600 is just too painful. i would reccomend using a virtual desktop of 1024x768 or higher if your using 800x600. see the X docs on how to do this, its not too hard. been a while since i had to do it though. nate
