i think loki must be an exception. i hardly think those big game developers just gave loki the source to their games to port it to linux.. loki must've had to pay for it..and they have to recoup those losses somehow ..ive bought most of loki's games just to try to show my support, im not much of a gamer, have only played 2 or 3 of the titles that they have out of about 12 that i own. many were still in the shrinkwrap boxes for 6 months after i bought them, opened them on the weekend found one of the games had no cd in the box! the box had never been opened but still odd to find no cd ..(heros of might and magic 3 or something). ohwell. i didn't buy it to play it :/ all of the software that has originated from loki i believe is free & open source. i personally don't mind paying for software, it either has to be good quality(e.g. vmware), stands out when using it(e.g. opera), or i want to support the company in my own limited way(loki products). don't get me wrong tho loki games are good quality at least those that i have played..(Unreal tournament, simcity 3000). ive also bought dozens of apps/games for my Handspring visor. open source is nice..but since im not a developer it doesn't do a whole lot for me directly unless theres a community (or at least an individual) to support it. i would gladly pay additional funds if it meant i could get the non-free stuff like vmware, loki products, mpegtv, opera, BRU that have been tested with debian and ideally in deb packages. the only recent purchase that i kind of regret is BRU pro. i ordered 3 upgrade copies for my company and still 4 months later its not usable for me. at first they didn't support debian, support was added a few weeks ago, but after a week of evaluating it i found it unreliable at best, too easy to curropt. so im back to good ol command line bru and re wrote the scripts to do backups..now i have complete faith in the backups. nate
