It means "preview 17" -- the 17th pre-release of 2.2.19. The real 2.2.19 would be just 2.2.19. You will also see things like "2.4.7-ac3", which refers to a version of 2.4.7 modified by Alan Cox (ac). Alan is one of the core kernel developers. Woody and Sid (the testing and unstable branches of Debian) have 2.4 kernels available. Craig
