That's odd; I'm using mutt as well and, for me, his mail showed up where it belonged in the thread just fine. Actually, the only time I ever see stuff not get threaded properly in mutt is when someone makes a new mail and pastes in the thread's subject line, instead of just doing a "reply". There's a guy on one of my other mailing lists who _always_ does that.
