Can debian detect a tape drive without rebooting?

Hi,
I have plugged a tape drive and want to use it without rebooting it.It is
connected to an scsi controller (aic7xxx_old module).Kernel 2.4.19
"mt -f /dev/st0 status" says : No such device
If it is possible then how?
