Me too: I've followed all the 2.4.x kernels except 2.4.3 which wouldn't
compile on my box. I always do a make-kpkg build-package and then do an
install of the kernel which has been wrapped into a deb. This also runs
lilo to update kernel used on boot.

No problems here at all.

The only thing I can think is that you've got your / partition as a reiser
partition? Do you have a seperate /boot partition that's ext2?

Apart from that, I can't think of owt else.
