The latter. (That is, after all, exactly what it says.)
The client is running as root, but you probably (I hope it's true) started
X as yourself. You need to do this:
$ export XAUTHORITY=~/.Xauthority
$ su
or run
$ xhost +localhost
or something else to give root the right to run on your X server.
