Looks like you've "su'd" to a different user from the one who started X. There are various "solutions" to this problem available. Who says it's "the easiest method" ?? That's strictly a personal opinion... I actually prefer "make menuconfig" and find it easier than "make xconfig". Also, if you're trying to "dumb down" some instructions on compiling a kernel, do you think your target audience should be trying to compile their own kernels just yet ?? Regards Hall
