I had the same problem!
Here's how I solved it!
First of all install the XF86_Mach64 server issuing:
apt-get install xserver-mach64 (debian potato 2.2r2 CD's)
then start XF86Setup and answer that you don't want to use the existing 
configuration file
Finally go on with your configuration.
