Um. How about: $ startx <args>; exit ...from console. I've even written a bash function to do this sanely from my laptop, posted here recently. Yes, launching X from a console w/o securing (or exiting) the console session is a security hole. However, securing or exiting the console session is trivial. -- Karsten M.
