I think that in general, the cablemodem providers disapprove of running servers while DSL providers don't. This will obviously vary from provider to provider, but AT&T owns the lion's share of the cable market. I run http, ftp, ssh, smtp, etc. all without problems. They are mostly looking to bust people using their @home service for (1) business use, (2) hacking, or (3) excessive bandwidth consumption, eg. napster. Technically, they could bust me for running "servers" but that could be said for any machine that has an open listening socket. The interpretation of the TOS is more important than the wording.
