I've had cable access via RoadRunner for two years and I've been very happy. They gave me a 3Com 509 ethernet card and it is well supported by linux. I use dhcpcd to obtain my IP address which very rarely changes (although lots of people seem to use "pump") instead. > > Also, I want to set up IP masq'ing with an old i486 running Windows > 95. I bought two cheap 10/100 PCI ethernet cards ($15 each - Realtek 8139 chipset) and built my own crossover cable to connect them (e.g. http://linux1.tlc.north.denver.k12.co.us/~gmoreno/wiring/peer.html ). You can buy crossover cables, too, pretty cheap. Then it's just a matter of configuring the networking stuff. In general... it's a very inexpensive method, it's fast, and it's relatively easy to setup. -- Brian J.
