I did something similar to this, but not only to build things. I use a dummy user for evaluating programs that I don't know very much about (and which obviously are not setuid anybody else) -- so that if the program sends something back to whoever wrote it (e.g., like it is rumoured about Real Player), it doesn't grab *my* sensitive data. I do this until I feel comfortable with the software to use under my own account.
