I use: gpm: mouse type imps2 coming off /dev/psaux, repeat type "raw"
x windows: mouse type imps2 coming off /dev/gpm I never have to restart gpm. The only time I have a problem is when interrupts are missed for unrelated reasons; that sends the mouse driver into a funny mode, from which you can recover by rolling the mouse wheel back and forth a couple times.
