Get a jumpered modem. Get an external modem. Get a modem that specifically lists GNU/Linux support. Expect to pay ~$100 - $150. You can get internal modems for less, but they're significantly harder to debug and diagnose when they fail to work correctly. Some people think they make good coffee, sufficiently ground.
