I have this in my .muttrc. It's from some howto, but I don't remember
where:

I've never seen a thread active for a month.  Arguments could be made
for pushing this back to a week and using the Debian archives for
anything older than that; this generally leaves me with ~2500 messages
in my =debian-user, most of which I ignore, since mutt handles them so
quickly I forget about them.
