that probably means you are running out of low memory (below 640kB barrier) type mem, if you dont have at least 600kB free i'd say you gotta do some cleanup, i suggest you make a boot disk or boot directly from the CD if possible. Rotten > yes you can, i advise you do this actually, esp if your not confident with an fdisk program(my first linux install i wiped my C: drive, mys econd i had more then 1 active partition and the system didnt boot right) debian's setup will gracefully autodetect the existing partitions. i use pqmagic4 to do this on any system that has to co exist with another kind of partition(that is not 100% linux) Rotten >3. Should I defragment my hard drive? if your using FIPS (a free partition resizer) you should..if your using pqmagic, it doesnt matter. in any case you should its always good practice to defrag on a very regular basis, although it in no way will help/hurt you when installing linux.
