A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far way, someone said... > Hello > > I've got 32 mb in this p166 mmx system. The problem is that I have > 32mb and at the shell prompt, 31mb is used up when I type free. Is > debian really eating all that memory or is it something else??
Very likely that 31MB is being used up by the file system cache. This is what I get when I type 'free' on my workstation: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 128476 120848 7628 66024 2984 59472 -/+ buffers/cache: 58392 70084 Swap: 83012 4108 78904 I sure as hell don't have 120MB of stuff in memory. As you can see, about half of that is 'cached'. In other words, the file system cache. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Phil Brutsche [EMAIL PROTECTED] "There are two things that are infinite; Human stupidity and the universe.
