Andrew: I don't seem to be having the same kind of problems with the DS 3D 4000. However, configuring X was slightly touchy. I had to use a combo of xf86config and "touched it up" with XF86Setup I finally settled on 16 bps with 800x600, 1024x768, 640x480. It uses the svga server.
