I've had a similar problem with qpopper on a P-150, so it is probably not a function of architecture. I tried deleting the lockfile on the server, but as soon as I tried to retrieve the mail, it created a new lockfile on the server and I get the same error. I installed cucipop (non-free, unfortunately) and the problem disappeared.
