I would say yes.. if you "other laptop" works fine in other endpoints.
You can try replaceing the patch cord with a new one. Also if you are in a building with pre-existing wiring, you might want to look at distances. I am not sure if you are wanting FastEthernet, but you will need to make sure you have CAT5 throughout your connection. That means if you have modular jacks (as in a wall jack) it needs to be CAT5 rated. Distance (If I remember correctly) is 90m or about 300ft.
