I would really just suggest that you get a book called "Running Linux" (O'Reilly) and read it. I learned more about Linux in that one book (I consider myself reasonably proficient in how the thing works) than I did in lots of other bits `n' pieces on the web (slashdot et al.).
Alternatively get your hands on the Installation and Getting Started Guide at sunsite.unc.edu/LDP. Stick with Debian! Or at the very least distance yourself from Windows as much as you can, because Microsoft's concept of computing revolves around making more money instead of quality and giving people what they need. I understand completely that when you take the plunge and install Linux, you are in a sense thrown in at the deep end if all your previous experience is with Windows. If you stick with it, it really is worth your while though, especially if you are a computing/engineering student, or a computing professional. Hope this helps... vincent
